true fox
Vulpes is a genus of the sub-family Caninae. The members of this genus are colloquially referred to as true foxes, meaning they form a proper clade. This is opposed to the "false foxes" of Lycalopex, known as "South American foxes" or "zorros". Not counting subspecies or coat variations, there are twelve members of the genus, Vulpes vulpes being the type species when the genus was defined by Carl Linnaeus in 1758.
